Alternative Education
Our dropout prevention, credit recovery and dropout recovery programs eliminate distractions so students can focus on learning. Students meet academic requirements with our curriculum, which is aligned to state standards, develop social-emotional skills, achieve their post-secondary goals, and regain the confidence to build a successful future. Our team of teachers and other professionals are selected for their ability to establish relationships and build trust that students can rely on for support. (Study: A Decade Undone)
Dropout Prevention:
ChanceLight’s dropout prevention keeps students connected to school by addressing the barriers that may put them at risk for non-completion. Our programs keep students in school regardless of adult responsibilities or academic performance by offering a focused academic program with curriculum aligned to state standards, behavioral and mental health services, social-emotional learning and college and career preparedness. Our school culture and climate is reinforced by Restorative Practices and our trauma-Informed approach to ensure students have a safe place to thrive.
93% of students report feeling safe in ChanceLight programs.
46% of ChanceLight students attend one of our dropout prevention programs. Although they are attending ChanceLight, students remain on district rolls and count in district graduation rates. Students can enroll at any time during the year and begin earning credits immediately.
Our dropout prevention programs may be a solution for students who have been suspended or expelled.
Dropout Recovery
More than a million students drop out of high school a year. Our dropout recovery programs seek to stop this cycle by locating students who have dropped out and re-engaging them in education. We work with students to navigate the life issues that led to dropping out and provide wrap-around services and intervention to ensure they remain engaged and connected. We help students achieve their individual accomplishments by visualizing a clear pathway to a positive future.
Since 2014, more than 15,000 students who have dropped out have returned to school with the help of ChanceLight.
Meet Elijah:
“I was in a really dark place at the time, thinking down on myself and feeling like I was not going to amount to anything in life.”
“The teachers at Ombudsman really helped me catch up with the work, and they were always very thorough.”
Credit Recovery
Students can enroll to recoup credits for previously failed courses. We use a variety of educational strategies, and students are free from artificial time constraints – meaning they can recover a course at any time. All courses are aligned to state standards and may be paced to the district requirements.
Accelerated Learning
Students in our accelerated learning programs complete school district course requirements at a faster pace, allowing them to quickly return to their district school or graduate. Students benefit by progressing rapidly to college or career; districts benefit by keeping accelerated students on their rolls and counting toward their graduation rates.
Juvenile Justice
ChanceLight sees the child, not charge, and we focus on students’ futures, not their pasts. We use a Trauma Informed approach and Restorative Justice Practices to address the needs and challenges our students have experienced previously and throughout enrollment. By treating each student with dignity, teachers ensure students feel respected and create an atmosphere that fosters learning, often resulting in a GED or diploma.
ChanceLight provides our young adults with hope because their personalized curriculum is designed to help them succeed in life. This program opens their eyes to the power of an education and provides passionate teachers who focus on helping our students earn credits, learn job skills, and get back on track to graduate. Students leave this program more excited about their future, which is a significant win for them and our community.
