COVID-19 has made youth mental health, disengagement from school and learning loss unprecedented crises for school districts and their students. Districts have limited resources and unlimited need, and the pandemic has only made things worse. ChanceLight Education can support students’ mental and emotional well-being, re-engage them in school, address learning loss and teach them where they learn best, whether it’s at home, in school or in a hybrid environment.
Mental Health
According to a special report by the American Psychological Association, COVID-19 and its repercussions are shining a light on the critical need for school-based mental health services.
“For years, untreated mental and behavioral health disorders have been a simmering problem in our nation’s schools. Each year, an estimated 1 in 5 U.S. children experience a mental, emotional or behavioral disorder, including anxiety, depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and disruptive behavioral disorders. Yet only about 20% of them receive care from a specialized mental health provider, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And that was before COVID-19.”

Student Re-engagement
A study of “Youth Disconnection in the Age of Coronavirus” by the Social Science Research Council identifies increased risks for students who are either not attending school or working. Again, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbates these risks.
“When students leave the school environment, remaining engaged in academic tasks is difficult, and returning to school once it opens again is not guaranteed. These challenges are particularly acute for young people already at risk of not completing their degree. Many students depend on school for meals and special educational supports. Many students don’t have a home environment that is conducive to doing work; they may lack a computer or an internet connection, or they may have siblings who need to use the same room or device. With libraries and cafes closed, these students have nowhere to go.”

Intensive Intervention for Learning Loss
It’s estimated students will have lost about 30 percent of typical yearly achievement gain in reading, and about 50 percent in mathematics by the time schools reopen (source: NWEA). ChanceLight Education has the people, the strategies and the tools to address learning loss.
